‘Twas the year of our Lord 1957, during a socialist regime, that I exchanged a doe rabbit for a bee colony with my confirmation sponsor. The bee colony then took two years to swarm, causing me great sadness. However, if you are meant to be a beekeeper, a beekeeper you shall become. That same year I used stakes from the neighbour’s vineyard to build an apiary in the backyard and placed two old locally specific hives of the modified AŽ (Alberti-Žnideršičev) variety (lower frames) in the apiary. Bees spontaneously inhabited these hives in 1958 and 1959 and these bee colonies signified the start of my beekeeping that encompassed at the most 120 bee colonies of the first line, 50 bee colonies of the second line, and 100 bee colonies of the third line.
During my beekeeping career I have never experienced a mass colony collapse. The worst year in that respect was 1964 when I lost 7 bee colonies due to the prolonged winter and the chestnut honey during hibernation: the bees could not leave the hives between 20 October and 19 March.
During my time as a beekeeper I have sold over 1500 bee colonies and have gifted around 150 bee colonies, but no more than twice to the same recipient. I can honestly say that I am a beekeeper that the bees come to on their own and they stay with me. When my honey production per bee colony dwindles to the level that is normal for the other beekeepers in the local area I will give up beekeeping altogether.
