In the old town centre of Črnomelj, we knead, shape, and bake traditional pretzels on a more than 200-year-old table.

The people of Črnomelj have always been experts in pretzel baking, and records about entrepreneurial women of Črnomelj who baked pretzels and sold them at fairs date back to 1855. If pretzels hadn’t been important, the people of Črnomelj would certainly not have taken the nickname Prestarji or pretzel makers. Today in Črnomelj, it smells of pretzels again, which are being kneaded, twisted, baked, and munched. Gatherings, joy, fun, and pleasure are indispensable ingredients of Črnomelj pretzels, accompanied by good wine or juice from Bela krajina. Pretzel baking is a social event, as it has been frequently accompanied by a competition in creativity, skills, and wittiness. We compare each other, we tease one another, and in the end, we eat together what we have created. And what can be nicer than a piece of nice-smelling, crunchy bread dough?
