Today’s city of Črnomelj is located in an area that has been settled with minor interruptions for more than three thousand years. Under its current buildings there are rich, centuries-old archaeological layers which are a testimony of the life of the settlement and its people. The story of Črnomelj is the story of ups and downs, times of prosperity and decline, importance and insignificance, long, rich, and captivating.
The permanent museum exhibition focuses on the history of the city, its immediate surroundings, and its people. It speaks through archaeological material and archive documents, depicts the past with rich graphics, photographs, and reconstructions, and outlines the past of the city at the heart of Bela Krajina, the borderland, in words and images. Get to know the story of Črnomelj at the permanent exhibition titled Črnomelj in the Fork of the Millennia.
The Črnomelj Town Museum is set up in the birth home of the writer Miran Jarc. It was built in 1844 on the parcel of the former City Hall and housed the first school in Črnomelj for five decades. Around 1897, the building was extended and decorated with a rich painting in the form of diverse flower and geometric motifs. Since 2013, it hosts the permanent museum collection.
