In 1869, the first Slovenian fire protection unit was established. At its anniversary, the Slovenian Firefighters’ Museum was opened, which was in 2003 named after the long-year president of the Slovenian Firefighters Association and the initiator of the Museum, Dr Branko Božič. The museum is located in the old Metlika centre in two buildings in the direct vicinity of the Metlika castle. It showcases the heritage of firefighting from the beginnings until today. It exhibits different fire hoses and other parts of firefighting equipment. In 2019, it celebrated 150 years since the formation of the first fire protection unit in Slovenia.
