Sustainable ways to visit historic cities - by train or bus
Visit the towns of Bela Krajina by train! From Ljubljana, head southeast and get off in Črnomelj and Metlika.
What can I see?
In Črnomelj, you can walk from the railway station past Jurjevanjska Draga, where the oldest folklore festival takes place every June Jurjevanje, and continue to the old town center, where you can see the Treasury under the Črnomelj Castel, the Church of St Peter and the Church of the Holy Spirit. If you're thirsty, you can fill up your water bottle from the drinking fountains next to the churches, which is much needed in summer. Visit the TIC Črnomelj on St Peter's Square and buy the best products of the Belokranjsko brand, which guarantees exceptional quality and the local origin of raw materials.
From the Church of the Holy Spirit, descend the stairs and cross the Lahinja and Dobličice bridges to reach the Müller Inn, where you will be served Belokranjsko food, as they are one of the receivers participating in the Tastes of Bela Krajina and are proud recipients of the Belokranjsko brand certificate.
Or take the e-bike, located at the Črnomelj Castle, and discover Bela Krajina on a bicycle. There are 4 BiKe stations in Bela Krajina where you can pick up an e-bike.
Check the current offer in Bela Krajina in the Open Doors of Bela Krajina.
What about in Metlika?
From the railway station in Metlika, you can walk to the old town centre. On the way, stop at the Metlika Wine Cellar to see one of the longest wine cellars in Slovenia and taste the wines of Bela Krajina. In the town center, see the magnificent Metlika Castle and the Bela Krajina Museum, hidden between the castle walls. In front of the castle is a park created by Plečnik's first pupil, Gizela Šuklje. Walk to the other side of the market center and descend to Obrh, the town's spring, where they used to wash their laundry and tell each other the juiciest news. Stop at Bela Krajina House of Local Delights, a shop selling local products, where you can buy a basket full of Belokranjska delicacies or bake your own pogače (flatbread).
Welcome to Bela Krajina!

Campaign By train for culture! invites you to experience the beauty of historic towns, their pulse and cultural attractions in a more ecological way, without the crowds and worries of the roads. Travel by train or bus is pleasant, comfortable, romantic, and by public transport you can visit corners bypassed by the usual routes.
Campaign details
The campaign aims to encourage domestic consumers to visit historic towns and cities using environmentally friendly means of transport (public transport). The campaign will target two main target groups: pensioners and families, with the main focus on pensioners who already have the possibility to use public transport free of charge throughout Slovenia (with a valid and relevant IJPP card). Visitors will be offered content to fill their day in historic cities and experience special cultural experiences. The campaign also follows current national policies and guidelines on sustainable forms of mobility and reducing the carbon footprint of transport.
Members of the Community of Museums of Slovenia in Historic Towns and affiliated institutions from other cities - in total some 80 outstanding heritage sites - will grant visitors a 20% discount on regular ticket prices to cultural institutions on presentation of a Slovenian Railways ticket valid on the day of the visit or on presentation of a certificate issued on the basis of a presented IJPP card, and after 1 June also the new single ticket "Slovenia". This is to encourage visitors to visit the cultural sites that are the priceless heritage and wealth of our cities.
The campaign runs from 21 June to 31 August 2024.
This year, we are complementing the campaign with special prize draws, in which we and Slovenian Railways will invite visitors to museums and galleries and to family experiences in historic towns. Prize draws on the Historic Cities Facebook and Instagram pages and on Going by Train will run throughout the summer, together we will give away tickets to cultural institutions and train tickets.
