Divji Potok
Divji Potok is a wonderful gem of nature amid the Kočevje forests. Divji Potok comes forth above the Srednja Vas pri Črmošnjicah Village, approximately 10 kilometers from Semič. The stream flows mostly through a forest. After 3,5 kilometers of torrential flow, Divji Potok continues into the Črmošnjičica Stream flowing towards Dolenjske Toplice.
A special feature of Divji Potok is tufa precipitation. Tufa is a sedimentary rock, formed when carbonated minerals precipitate out of water. Tufa settles on moss and plants, creating rapids, waterfalls, and other obstacles in the stream. With tufa deposits, rapids, and waterfalls are constantly changing and growing. The rising waterfalls give water the power to create pools. Water from the nearby Mašelj Water Cave contributes to the water volume of Divji Potok. Mašelj Water Cave has a constant and abundant flow even in the dry season. Divji Potok with its surroundings is an important habitat for flora and fauna, bound to water areas.
If you take a closer look at the stream, you will certainly see stone crayfish, and the fire salamander. Fortunately, the cold and clear water enables their survival. Along the stream, the white-throated dipper and the grey wagtail are found. In the tree tops woodpeckers, and many songbirds are present. Beech and common hornbeam are predominant among broad-leaf trees. In the undergrowth, many herbs thrive. Wild garlic, spring snowflakes, and buttercups are among them.
Along Divji Potok a 2.5-kilometer educational trail is situated. The trail is interesting both for adults and children throughout the year. In winter the stream freezes in certain places, in its stream, you can admire works of art made from ice.
