Krupa Spring
Slovenia's most beautiful spring in Slovenia
Near Semič is the picturesque Krupa Spring. The spring is one of the most frequented points in Bela Krajina. The Krupa River springs beneath the Krupa Village, just four kilometers from Semič towards Gradac.
The river has multiple karst springs beneath a 30-meter-high and 50-meter-long stone wall. Beneath the stone wall is a 7-meter-deep source lake. The lake captivates visitors with its emerald color regardless of the weather. If you visit the spring in the early morning, you can relish in the morning mists and serenity. Occasionally a raven nests above the spring, try to find its nest. The Krupa River is the largest in terms of volume in Bela Krajina. The average minimum flow is 1000 liters per second. Throughout the year the water temperature is around 10 °C. During the summer heat, it is especially pleasant near the spring.
Waters from the nearby Kočevski Rog Hills, Radohe Hills, and Gorjanci Hills supply the spring, this was confirmed with tracer tests.
Not only beautiful but also full of life
The Krupa Spring and the Source of the Cave Mussel, further downstream, are the only known habitats of the Congeria Jalzici Cave Mussel in Slovenia. This animal is the only known cave mussel in the world. In the hinterlands of the Krupa River endemic cave snails, cave worms, and even olms were found. Underground animals are in nature mostly inaccessible but you can learn about them in Semič Museum House.
The area around the Krupa River is full of birds. More than forty species, of which nine are listed in the red register of endangered species in Slovenia can be found here. The European pond turtle lives along the Krupa River. In Slovenia, the European pond turtle is known as the only indigenous freshwater turtle.
