The Lahinja Landscape Park situated upstream of the Lahinja River, in the middle of Bela Krajina, on the road from Črnomelj to Vinica, welcomes nature, geology, biology, history, and ethnology enthusiasts. The landscape park is among the smallest but exceptionally biodiverse parks in Slovenia. Learn about the beaver, the timid otter, the colorful kingfisher, the indigenous European pond turtle, the spacious habitats of wild orchids, and where dry karst and water meet.

Relaxing in nature

Observe. Inhale. Listen.
Rest.
Beneath the park’s tree canopy, you can feel the pulse of the nature reserve, which, due to the high level of groundwater, attracts different inhabitants than the predominantly karst landscape of Bela Krajina.
If you are lucky and silent you can spot a beaver or even an otter. Do you see something blue? A kingfisher! The Lahinja Landscape Park has a lot of different colors.
Here the whiteness of Bela Krajina is represented by vast buckwheat fields contrasting the green canopies, riverbeds, and springs.

The predominant bedrock of Bela Krajina is porous limestone and is situated in the low karst plain, crisscrossed with numerous subterranean rivers, sinkholes, and caves. The Lahinja Landscape Park in the middle of Bela Krajina is a junction between permeable and impermeable ground, on which the slow Lahinja River flows. Downstream, the rivers transform into a green beauty with many meanders on which many people left their traces throughout history.

Walk to Nerajski Lugi, a wetland among the karst landscape, that overflows with enough rain. Take a stroll on the wooden walkway over the wetland to the bird observatory. Where does the road lead? Let it remain a secret.

The path is 8 kilometers long, therefore wear appropriate footwear, have something to eat and drink. In the summer heat visitations of the park are not recommended.
