Wood products
When he retired, craftsman Rade Jaklič took up a new hobby: designing wood products. Rade's flirtation with wood began shortly before his retirement, when he made a replica of a horsetail for the Bela Krajina Museum. After that, Rade made several more horsetails. He also started to make wooden coats of arms of municipalities and associations and replicas of flutes or shepherd's pipes.
A horsetail is a wooden preparation for spinning, which can be decorated with carvings. The spinner tied a skein of yarn to it. If she was spinning with the horsetail only, she held it in her hands or clipped it to her belt. After the invention of the spinning wheel, the horsetail became an integral part of it. The ornately shaped long spindle hanks with a spear-shaped spindle spout have survived the longest in Bela Krajina and Istria. The carved patterns were mostly geometric, and the ornamentation was often based on hexagonal rosettes. The handicraftsman used lime wood, which is easy to work with.
The flute is an instrument made and used by shepherds when grazing. Rade makes both single and double flutes. He uses lime and walnut wood. The walnut wood is more difficult to work with, but its multi-coloured nature makes it special and worth the effort. The surface of the flute is decorated with White Carpathian motifs, dominated by geometric figures and sun wheels. The flutes were also known for accompanying the Green George, who was led from house to house on Jurjevo. The flute is 30 cm long and made entirely of one piece of wood, except the mouthpiece.
Rade Jaklič is the recipient of the quality certificate for the Belokranjsko horsetail and frulica.
