The Church of the Holy Spirit is located on ancient cultural grounds, where human traces from the Neolithic to the Modern Age can be found. During the Iron Age, its location represented the edge of the settlement. In Late Antiquity, a Late Antiquity church was located in its place, the apse and mosaic of which have been discovered. In the Middle Ages, a strongly fortified building was erected in its location, which represented the southeastern corner of the city and together with the wall represented a vital part of the city’s defense. From this building, the current Church of the Holy Spirit developed in the second half of the 15th century which was mentioned in written sources for the first time in 1487. Until the 20th century, it has been through several ups and downs and was intensely damaged during World War II. It was renovated and reopened in 2007, representing the central cultural building in the old town center of Črnomelj. In the church, you can see A Late Antiquity mosaic of the Aquileia type (4–5th century), an apse of a Late Antiquity church (4–5th century), a tombstone of the scribe Ivan Živkovič (17th century).
