Outdoor activities among yellow leaves

The heat is slowly fading, so get ready for some great hiking and cycling in Bela Krajina. The harvest is underway and the leaves are turning yellow in the vineyards. What to do in Bela Krajina during autumn?

Cycling during the vines

You've just learned what a vineyard is called in Bela Krajina. Well done! The vine is important here and it is in autumn that all the attention is focused on the grapes, the harvest, and the preparation of a new supply of the best wines in the cellars. Bela krajina is the smallest wine-growing region in Slovenia, but our winemakers produce some of the best wines. Why is that?

At the edge of the wine-growing region of Posavje is the warmest area with a continental, sub-Pannonian climate and Mediterranean influences. The significant temperature differences between day and night favor the production of aromatic wines that retain their freshness. The geological composition of Bela Krajina is dominated by limestone and dolomite, red clay, felsic, sandstone and lapis.
Of all the wines, the locals are most proud of Metliška črnina, says a sworn Belokranjec:"For us, she is the real queen. Metliška črnina existed before anyone even knew our region and wines." This is indeed the only wine in Slovenia that is black.

The Metlika and Semiš parts of Bela Krajina offer spectacular autumn panoramas on a bike. Watch the hilly landscape interspersed with paths between vines and birch forests with bracken undergrowth.

The best spots are where you can't get to by car, so it's best to walk

Explore Bela Krajina on foot, because it's the only way to discover the most hidden places away from the main roads. Just like on a bike, you can walk past vineyards and reach the wine cellars of winemakers, where you'll be served the wine of your choice.

Take a walk among birch forests with bracken undergrowth. Brown eagle ferns are now waiting to be cut, dried, and put into haystacks. There used to be many birch forests with bracken undergrowth, and the famous white birch trees that made Bela Krajina famous grew there. Why are there so few of them and why are birch forests with bracken undergrowth protected?

Every part of Bela Krajina is worth a hike. Discover the Temple of Mithras in the forest above Rožanec, the karst field with the ruins of the Gottscheer houses below Mirna Gora, take a walk right next to the Krupa River, climb from Črmošnjice to Markova Glava for a view over the Črmošnjica Valley, or hike up Sodevska Stena for one of the most beautiful views of the Kolpa River.

Autumn Kolpa? YES!

After a summer of paddling, when our river reached temperatures of 29 degrees Celsius, it's time to enjoy the rain and cool down. Despite the higher water levels, the Kolpa River can still be crazy good in autumn! We don't mean flood conditions and a high and rainy Kolpa! You are not Bear Grills, don't test your survival skills, because if the river can take a big tree to Karlovac, it will take you to Sisak.

Our raft and canoe providers will only let you out on the water if conditions are safe, and for larger groups, an experienced guide will go with you. Paddle down the river or just let the current flow and admire the nature around you. There's a cottage or a cottage on the Slovenian or Croatian side, grey herons, mills..

How do you prepare for a trip down the Kolpa? Educate yourself on our Instagram profile and don't be like Urška!

A fisherman caught it..

Imagine peace and quiet. The flow of the Kolpa River, lapping at your feet while you hold the fishing rod in your hands, persuades your thoughts to drift away. Suddenly, you shudder. The fishing rod has moved, a sign that the fish has bitten. Which one is it? Catfish, chub, trout, barbel? Suddenly you are overwhelmed with adrenaline and joy.
Buuuuttttt - first you have to get a license and check the regulations on fishing in certain districts of Bela Krajina. The Fishermen's Association Črnomelj and the Fishermen's Association Metlika control the districts.
