The Metlika Wine Cellar dates back to 1909 when the first wine cooperative in Metlika was founded. The mighty 108-metre-long wine cellar, with its unique tunnel-like shape, is a feast for the eyes and a place for a pleasant wine indulgence. The noble glow of countless medals and awards testifies to a mighty history and a great enthusiasm for producing fine wines. The first Metliška Črnina was bottled in 1968 and is of great importance for the development of the Bela Krajina wine-growing industry. A new Slovenian milestone was set in 1981 when the Metlika Cellar was the first in Slovenia to produce rosé wine and 1986 the first ice wine. KZ Metlika owns 27 hectares of its vineyards in the Metlika area and buys the rest of its grapes from its cooperators in the Bela Krajina region. Visitors can enjoy expert-led wine tasting and winery tours, as well as purchase wines.
