Bela Krajina calls to the table: where to eat in Bela Krajina

Are you planning your holidays in Bela Krajina or are you already here and don't know where to go for lunch?
Let us help you. For gourmets and those who stick to standard tastes, Bela Krajina is a top choice.

You have to try Bela Krajina Finest

Are you a gourmet at heart and try something local in every destination? Then you're in the right place. Indulge yourself with tasting menus from our four caterers who are part of the Taste of Bela Krajina project and are also proud recipients of the Bela Krajina Finest label, which guarantees you home-grown, locally produced ingredients served on your plate. Visit the Kapušin Guesthouse in Krasinec, the Veselič Inn in Podzemlje, the Hotel Bela Krajina in Metlika, and the Müller Inn in Črnomelj.
The fusion of tradition and modernity, based on carefully produced local food, will not leave you indifferent. Taste Bela Kranjska Žlinkrofi (dumplings), buckwheat strudels and strudel soup, beef tongue, trout in various ways, and lamb, which can be found as a starter or main course.

Sounds tasty?

In addition to the insanely delicious food, treat yourself to wine pairings from a variety of suppliers. Whichever local wine is offered alongside the tasting menu or you choose yourself will be the right choice. Bela krajina lies on the sunny side of the Gorjanci Hills, which is why our soil is home to wines that write new wine notes every year with their healthy and ripe clusters. There are many winemakers and many wines in Bela Krajina, so we recommend a tasting with at least one of them.

We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the Tastes of Bela Krajina on Friday, 7 June at Gostišče Veselič. The special feature of the event is that all four restaurants associated with the project cook together. In addition to four greetings from the kitchen, there will be four courses. Live music will also fill the room during your hedonistic evening. The menu is priced at € 42, with wine accompaniments poured according to the guest's preference. We highly recommend it.

Of course, each of the restaurants listed above also has an a la carte offer, and those who prefer to dine on "Wiener schnitzel and fries", squid and other things that have to be on the menu will be satisfied. Except for the pizzas. You'll find pizzas in our pizzerias.

What about Bela Krajina Pogača and grilled lamb?

Bela Krajina, the land of white birch trees, white costumes, white sheep, and round, golden Pogača. A stereotypical image of Bela Krajina that changed in a hundred years. We have dressed ourselves in modern clothes, and we wear our costumes on stage. We have fewer and fewer birch trees due to the abandonment of traditional farming, Pogača, and lamb we still prepare.
Grilled lamb and piglet, or how we say it, Pečenka, the only restaurant where roasts are available every day, is Gostilna Samarin in Črnomelj, and on Fridays at Hotel Smuk in Semiču. Hotel Smuk has also been awarded the Bela Krajina Finest certificate and label for its roasts.

In any case, if you are in Bela Krajina for the weekend, we recommend you call tourist farms and order the quantity of roast you want the day before to take with you to your campsite, apartment, or wherever you are staying. The TO GO roast is best with spring onions and tomatoes, and bread. Why not have a picnic by the Kolpa River with a roast? You don't need knives and forks, because the roast is already cut into smaller pieces, ready to eat.
So, where can you order a roast?
The Butala Excursion Farm in Petrova vas,
The Bahor Farm in Tanča gora,
The Smuk Hotel in Semiču,
The Brulc Farm in Moverni Vas.

Would you like Bela Krajina pogača?

You won't get it in the bakery. As Bela Krajina pogača is best when it is warm, you need to order it, just like the roast. You can buy it at the Hotel Bela Krajina and at Veselič Inn, where it is baked daily for the restaurant's guests.
Bela Krajina Pogača is a protected dish, so not everyone can make and sell it. Certified Bela Krajina Pogača is round, cut into squares, coated with egg, sprinkled with caraway seeds, and salt. All other cakes are called Pogača. These can be topped with speck, various seeds, and other things.

We offer you an alternative. For those of you who have come to Bela Krajina to enjoy and learn something new, we suggest that you knead and bake it yourself. There is a Bela Krajina Pogača baking workshop in Bela Krajina House of Local Delights, where you can enjoy baking with sparkling wine, or in Belokranjsko Izročilo. Both are also on offer at this year's Open Doors of Bela Krajina.

From Pogača to pizza

Pizza, one of today's favourite dishes. Whether you're a fan or just don't know what else to eat, we have a selection of pizzerias to satisfy your craving for Italian cuisine. If you're wandering around Metlika, head for a pizza at the Pri starm Pildu restaurant or the Pizzeria Julija. In Črnomelj, you'll find pizza at Pizzeria Klepec, Pizzeria Strgar, Gostilna pri Špec, and in Vinica at Pavlič.

Your own chef?

Will you be cooking for yourself on holiday? We suggest you make your rich breakfasts and unforgettable dinners with local ingredients from the region. Head to the Bela Krajina House of Local Delights with the largest selection of local produce, or go straight home to the suppliers. In Bela Krajina we are lucky to be able to buy local flour, milk and dairy products, butter, meats, pasta, honey, teas, a whole range of oils, chilli sauces and the list goes on. A pint of beer or a glass of wine with lunch or dinner is also a good idea. We have that too. Choose from local products and produce, certified or not. It's important to eat locally. This also helps the sustainability of our destination, as shorter supply chains reduce our carbon footprint.
