Forget the formalities, just knock and come in – the doors of Bela Krajina are open!

Listen, traveller, it happens all too often that you wander through the hills of Bela Krajina, longing for a glass of Metliška Črnina Wine or a slice of warm, freshly baked Bela Krajina flatbread, only to find yourself standing in front of closed doors because you didn’t book a week in advance. As such, classic tourist hassles are completely alien to us, and we love simple, relaxed things. Local providers have come together under the umbrella of our product, OPEN DOORS OF BELA KRAJINA, and, once again, as they have done year after year, have thrown their doors wide open. This concept, which our regular visitors are already very familiar with, was designed with you in mind; we’ve coordinated our schedules with one simple aim: that you can turn up, knock and, without any formal announcements, experience our world first-hand across all three of our municipalities, from Črnomelj and Metlika all the way to Semiča. Once again this year, there’s no room for stress or rigid rules, as our entire programme is carefully divided into five top-class categories that will show you our region exactly as it is – authentic, bold and hospitable.

If you’d like to start by discovering our rich history and getting a feel for the artistic scene, why not begin with our guided tours, museums and galleries, where stunning collections and stories await you. The renovated Semič Museum will take you on a journey through time; in Metlika, the Bela Krajina Museum and the wonderful Kambič Gallery await you with open arms, whilst in Črnomelj, you simply mustn’t miss the Črnomelj Town Museum and the Treasury, which will reveal all the hidden treasures of Bela Krajina. You can round all this off with a guided tour titled ‘In the faithful embrace of two rivers’ or by visiting the exhibition ‘Defenders of the Crown and the Border’ at Črnomelj Castle, where you’ll learn just how stubborn and proud our people have always been. And when you’ve had enough of indoor spaces, our programme immediately invites you to enjoy outdoor adventures in nature, where you can surrender to the wild and refreshing rhythm of the Kolpa River. For those of you who love the wind in your hair, there’s boating and rafting on the river in the Poljanska Dolina along the Kolpa, an adventure park and the unique ‘Ride & Paddle’ experience at Camping Bela Krajina; and to top it all off and create unforgettable memories, you can even set off on a relaxed and fun walk with alpacas at the Njivenski farm.

For those of you who’d like to take a moment to enjoy some truly unique experiences, we’ve put together a range of activities where you can simply step into our shoes and try something completely new. You can take a seat at a school desk and laugh at the legendary Brihtna glava Primary School, visit the Bela Krajina herb garden beneath ‘ Gorjanci ’ at the Kočevar farm, or set off on a proper Metlika adventure organised by the Bela Krajina House of Local Delicacies. If the scent of tradition appeals to you, the BIBI Honey Boutique has a workshop on baking Črnomelj-style Pretzels waiting for you, along with an ethno tour of wool, flax, and hemp; and for those of you interested in the mysterious life of bees, you can become a beekeeper for a day with Anica Štublar. And as we know that all this is sure to leave you feeling thirsty, our lavish tastings are a must-visit stop, where winemakers and olive oil producers will treat you to the very best our land has to offer. The Metlika Wine Cellar, the Pečarič House of Wine and the Semič Winegrowers’ Association will pour you some superb wine during a guided tour of their cellars. Do also pop into the Bela Krajina House of Local Delicacies for a wine trilogy, where you’ll discover the true secrets of wine. For a sweet and healthy treat for your taste buds, there’ll be honey tastings at the Veselič Beekeeping Farm or the Beekeepers’ Association Črnomelj, as well as an unmissable tasting of cold-pressed oils at the Pečarič Oil Mill.

Before you set off back home with a full heart, our local produce invites you to take a little of our warmth back with you to your kitchen at home. Visit the bustling market in Črnomelj or Metlika, where the tables are groaning under the weight of local delicacies, award-winning cheeses, honey and the fragrant produce of our farmers, and stock up on authentic Bela Krajina flavours. Although summer by the Kolpa River is a truly amazing experience, we urge you to make the most of the quieter and cooler autumn days too, when our countryside is draped in the most beautiful colours, and our wine cellars are just the right temperature for long chats over a glass of local wine. So don’t linger on the sofa any longer – click on our website, belakrajina.si, where we update the opening times of all our venues every week; choose whichever one takes your fancy at that moment, and simply pop round without any prior notice.

We’re already waiting for you with our doors open and a glass poured; all you have to do is get in your car and come and experience our Bela Krajina exactly as it should be enjoyed!
